Dear Visitor,

Thank you for your interest in the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) and welcome to the official website. The NSG is a group of forty-eight nuclear supplier countries that seeks to contribute to the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons through the implementation of two sets of Guidelines for nuclear exports and nuclear-related exports.

These Guidelines as well as additional information on the NSG, including the results of all recent Plenary Meetings and an IAEA Information Circular document entitled The Nuclear Suppliers Group: Its Origins, Role and Activities, can be found on the Documents page of this website.

I assumed the chairmanship of the NSG in March 2017 and look forward to building on the foundation laid by my predecessor, Ambassador SONG Young-wan, by working in close cooperation with Participating Governments to ensure that the NSG remains an effective, efficient and relevant organization within the global non-proliferation and disarmament regime. Since the 2016 Seoul Plenary, the Group has been working hard toward this end. Several months ago, for example, we were able to conclude a three-year review process by publishing the revised NSG Part 1 and Part 2 Guidelines on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) website as INFCIRC/254/Rev.13/Part 1 and INFCIRC/254/Rev.10/Part 2, respectively. The NSG has also held productive discussions on proliferation trends and outreach with third parties, two important issues that enable the NSG to keep up with the evolving global security landscape and developments in the nuclear and nuclear-related markets.

As Chair, I will be liaising as appropriate with the IAEA, interested States and outside bodies to ensure dissemination of the updated Guidelines and Control Lists, facilitate adherence to the same and improve public awareness about the work and mission of the Group.

I hope that I can count on your support as the NSG works to balance the benefits of international trade and cooperation in the nuclear field for peaceful purposes with the need to ensure that this does not contribute to the proliferation of nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices.

Ambassador SHIN Dong-ik,
Chair of the Nuclear Suppliers Group 2016–2017
